A hair splinter?

Yes, a hair splinter.

Tonight I learnt that such a thing exists, and by golly, they hurt. I don’t understand how a hair worked its way into the sole of my foot, but it did. At first I thought I was starting to grow hair in really odd places, but a quick google search reassured me that I’m not going insane or becoming a werewolf. At least, not yet. On further inspection of the hair, it was revealed that it was indeed a cat hair.

Thanks a lot, cats.

I have a new found respect for hair dressers and animal groomers, apparently this is a common ailment within their profession.

Have you ever heard of a hair splinter?

*I’m editing this for all the people who are finding this post by googling ‘hair splinter.’ All I did was pull it out with tweezers and complained to my boyfriend for a moment, the only adverse effect was a bit of pain.*

Well i had a lump near my tail bone for months and has recently become really sore and tender… I went to the doctors as it got to the point where it would hurt to sit or lie down… The doctor had a look and a feel only to tell me it was a hair splinter, but it has gone in so deep my doctor had to refer me to see a surgeon. My friend that is a hair dresser often told me about these and i use to laugh at her… Not anymore

Not to bring an old thread back from the dead, but…

I get these all of the time, from my own hair right after a hair cut. If I fail to keep the little pieces of hair off of my arms and hands, the hair will immediately find its way under the first couple layers of skin. It’s easy to pick them out, not only from the pain and itching caused by it, but my little red dots around the point of entry.

My hair appears to be no different than any other fair skinned – brown haired person, but apparently my hair has some unique properties…or my skin is very soft?

It’s a pain to say the least.

I just had one in the bottom of my foot! It looks to be mine. The irony is that since I am barefoot in the house all day (it’s an Asian thing) my feet are tougher on the bottom – but the hair still got in there. I thought it was a piece of glass, how much it stung! I was able to pull it out, but it tugged quite a bit. I found it so odd I had to look and see if anyone else had one too lol.

Happens to me all the time. It used to be especially bad back when our dog was still alive, because stiff, pointy hairs that would easily get stuck in your foot. That and he shed like mad. But yeah, cat hair is a common culprit as well. You have my sympathy. =/

    • mandaray / Jan 31 2011 2:00 am

*because he had stiff, pointy hairs

English. Why must you elude me so easily.

    OUCH!!

I’ve never had a hair splinter per say, but I suffer from ingrown hairs regularly. The Brazilian waxes are especially bad.

    Good luck with it!

What the hell? I’ve never heard of this but now I’m going to seach my entire being for a hair splinter. How do you get it out?

    • Greybadger / Oct 19 2013 9:56 pm

Had heard about these from a friend who had a boxer, after buying a Doberman and walking around the house barefoot within months i had a pain in the sole of my foot.As stated above home surgery was required due to my lack of flexibility this needed my wife to dig/chisel said hair out.Happened again at least twice the most bizzare one being the time a hair wormed its way through the webbing of skin between my toes.As it had no weight on said area felt no pain, spotted it coming out the other side and painfully extracted. Was left with a hole through said webbing which has now healed .I NOW WEAR SLIPPERS AT ALL TIMES :))

Oh my no, I’ve never heard of that! Now, that’s probably the first con I’ve heard in regard to having cats…..

    • Zoe / Jan 22 2011 11:27 am

Well you can get them from people, too! So no one’s safe, I guess having cats just increases your chances.

  14. Lily / Jan 22 2011 9:36 am

Yes I actually had one before Christmas. It was mine, and it hurt like crazy!! Keep the area clean. The doctor told me to use hand sanitizer on the area a couple times a day for a few days. Hope it gets better. (Mine only hurt for about a day, but I did keep it clean and sanitized).

    • Zoe / Jan 22 2011 11:26 am

Oh, thanks! I didn’t even think about that, I just pulled it out and that was it. I can’t even see where it was now, I guess I’ll just sanitise my whole foot!

You poor thing! I’ve never come across that before – I do however manage to find cat hairs just about everywhere else 🙂

    • Zoe / Jan 22 2011 11:26 am

Haha, they have a magical way of finding their way everywhere, don’t they?!

  16. ruby&lo / Jan 22 2011 5:36 am

Yes I have heard and had many! They are horrid, hope you are ok!

  17. ironyonhighheels / Jan 22 2011 5:19 am

Never heard of it. And at this very moment slightly grossed out at the thought lol

    • Zoe / Jan 22 2011 11:55 am

Ha! Sorry! Surely no grosser than a regular splinter, though?

      • ironyonhighheels / Jan 22 2011 3:28 pm

That’s what I tried to tell myself. 😀 Though somehow the idea that something as soft and bendable like a hair could have the same effect as a say wooden splinter – where I actually understand the physics LOL….*shudder*
        Naw – just kidding
